Innovations and ethical issues for the cryoconservation of animal genetic resources
On the occasion of the SAVE (Safeguard for Agricultural Varieties in Europe) - DAGENE (Danubian Alliance for the Preservation of Animal Genetic Resources) annual conference, the current status of the IMAGE project was presented by Waltraud Kugler, SAVE Foundation. The presentation about ethical questions like the choice of the breed and the animal to be conserved, the methods, costs and responsibilities, especially in genebank conservation, received a strong level of interest in the audience and continued to have an effect after the session at the ongoing conference. Scientists from the Danube countries and representatives of the SAVE European NGO partner organizations met in Kozard, Hungary under the topic “Ecosystems – Products – Conservation”.
Especially questions of decision-making processes and trade-offs between in situ and ex situ were discussed during the next days. After the presentation and a short discussion, the participants were asked to fill in a prepared survey on “Innovations and ethical issues for the cryoconservation of animal genetic resources”. The participants followed this request with strong interest. To get a broad picture and statements of stakeholders about ethical issues in genebank conservation, the survey is presented at different conferences and events. The evaluation of the surveys will be presented on the IMAGE Website.
